The Week of August 17, 2009 Updates – AZCO ACHIEVES PHENOMENAL SAFETY MILESTONE - AZCO INC. (Appleton, WI) recently reached another safety milestone-five million work hours without a lost-time incident-an exceptional achievement for a company with 110 full time employees and 350-400 construction craft workers in its shops and in the field. Ted Carew, AZCO's safety director, attributes the company's impressive safety record to its Zero Injury Philosophy and overall awareness of the safety process throughout the company. AZCO President Mark Loper supports the total commitment to providing a safe workplace, "The safety program starts with executive management and filters down."

Top Plants – High Bridge Combined Cycle Project, St. Paul, Minnesota  – Xcel Energy's High Bridge Plant was listed as a Top Gas-Fired Plant in the September 2008 issue. The article describes how Xcel Energy Corporation replaced their coal-fired plant with a less-carbon-intensive combined cycle plant. AZCO was contracted to install the underground circulating water piping, install two combustion turbines and a steam turbine, install the steam surface condenser, two HRSGs and the auxiliary boiler. The HRSGs were erected on site into two separate super modules and slid into the building for installation.

This project won the Minnesota OSHA Star Award in January 2007 for completing 300,000 total work hours

Wisconsin Public Service Corporation placed its world-class Weston 4 into commercial service on June 30 and is now enjoying the benefits of coal-fired supercritical technology's inherently higher efficiency, operating flexibility and lower CO2 emissions. For its unequalled environmental protection credentials, well-integrated project team and employing without a doubt the most advanced coal-fired steam generation technology of the U.S. today, Weston 4 is awarded POWER magazine's 2008 Plant of the Year award. AZCO was contracted for the construction of six separate conveyors, construction of the two junction houses, modifications to the existing crusher house and other mechanical equipment installations.

Project Management – How to Make a Power Plant a Welcome Neighbor, Faribault Energy Park, Faribault, Minnesota – Developing power projects has become less of a technical challenge and more of an exercise in developing good relationships among all the stakeholders. If a community understands the need for a new plant and is involved in its development process, the odds of a successful project increase. As reflected in one of the pictures showcased in the article, AZCO was contracted for the complete erection and alignment of the steam turbine.

Midwest Construction

Midwest Construction is a McGraw Hill Construction Publication aimed at the industrial, business and government construction industry in the Midwest. The December 2007 issue featured the Best of 2007 Projects across Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana and Eastern Missouri including the Bayshore Town Center, a project AZCO worked on in 2006. Unique issues to the site included a tight, 47-acre site, 22-month schedule, proximity to a residential neighborhood and the fact that the mall had to remain open during construction.

The design and construction industry recognized the importance of teamwork, coordination and collaboration in fostering successful construction projects, awarding companies and all team members responsible for excellence and innovation in a project’s use of structural steel. AZCO INC. was a member of the team who worked on the award-winning Skybridge in Davenport, Iowa.
