APPLETON, Wis. — AZCO, part of the Burns & McDonnell family of companies, has expanded its prefabrication shop, adding to its integrated prefabrication capabilities and bringing new equipment and tools that will further increase efficiency and productivity.
The expanded shop’s advanced robotic structural steel plasma cutter, capable of cutting, coping, notching and splitting steel beams, can reduce labor timelines by up to 75%. Other advancements in the shop expand AZCO’s capability to deliver metal components for heavy industrial construction projects around the world in markets ranging from renewables and battery storage to substations and food and beverage.
“By reducing production times, increasing our total floor space, as well as the tools within that space, we have the ability to move more projects in more market sectors through the shop faster and more efficiently,” says J. Brett Williams, president, AZCO.
The new enclosed space, divided into three bays, includes two 10-foot cranes and 20-foot hook-to-floor clearance. Each bay focuses on a specialty, from plate processing and structure processing to prefabrication assembly. The shop includes additional flex space to accommodate oversized structures without disrupting other processes. Three large-scale overhead doors on the front and back of the shop accommodate semitrailers and allow materials and finished products to flow seamlessly through the facility.
“By increasing the overall size of our cranes and overhead doors, we’ll be able to efficiently move and work on large tank vessels and other materials to serve our customers,” says Patrick Choudoir, project development manager, prefabrication, AZCO.
The shop’s 38,000 square feet is part of AZCO’s 83,000 total square feet of prefabrication shop space near its headquarters in Appleton, Wisconsin. The total space is dedicated to the creation of pipe and metal components for heavy industrial construction projects across the United States and the world. Components created include piping, battery storage and electric vehicle charger containers, data center modules, substations, skids, and several types of multitrade prefabricated modules.
